Wine Tasting
The art of Wine Tasting
Most wine tasting “experts” say that wine tasting is
an art and not an exact science. When someone tastes a wine it will
be his or her personal choice and they way they perceives the taste
of the wine. Therefore wine tasting is subjective, but if done via
a panel of tasting, should give a good indication on the wines in
question.
For example if we have ten wine tasters giving their opinion of a
particular wine and seven out of ten give it the thumbs up then the
wine would get a rating of seven on a scale of 1 to ten. This provides
a clear indication of the wine quality. However it is often the case
that wine tasters from different countries will have different opinions.
The art of wine tasting is a very old tradition which goes way back
in time when you would get have a wine taster to taste the wine before
the King would consume this. This may not have been just for quality
but to ensure the wine was not poisoned.
The art of wine tasting is split into four established stages or
areas which are; appearance (how the wine looks), fragrance (how the
wine smells) in month sensation and finish often referred to as the
aftertaste of the wine.
To ensure that wine tasters are not biased to any particular
wine, blind tasting are used, whereby the tasters receive
the wine without having seen the bottle or label of the
wine to ensure impartial judgments.
If you would like to participate in wine tasting there are many courses
around the country where you can learn these skills and these should
be very enjoyable courses.
